Located at Liberty Street and South End Avenue in Battery Park City, NY, the NYC Police Memorial was created to honor those who lost their lives in the line of duty. The memorial was dedicated on October 20, 1997. The officer's names and dates on which they were killed are engraved into granite slabs on the wall along the edge of the memorial.
The memorial was designed by architect Stuart Crawford using water as the key integrating element. A small fountain resides outside the formal memorial, signifying the rookie’s first day. The water flows down the flume past the granite wall, representing death, and then falls into the open pool. The area around the pool is called the “Sacred Precinct” where visitors can pay their respects and contemplate the lives lost. W&E Baum’s team works with the New York Police Department to update the names on the wall.
